Maarten Stevens received his first singing lessons from Arnold Ardts. At the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague he studied with Maria Acda-Maas, Han-Louis Meijer and Ana Sánchez Donate. He had singing lessons with Marcel Reijans and participated in masterclasses with Frank van Aken, Raymond Modesti and Meinard Kraak. Currently he is coached by Henny Diemer and Han-Louis Meijer.
As a soloist he sang among other things Vespro della Beata Vergine by Monteverdi, cantatas and Matthäus-Passion by Bach, Messiah by Händel, Die Schöpfung and Die sieben letzten Worte by Haydn, Requiem and Krönungsmesse by Mozart, Petite messe solennelle by Rossini, Les sept paroles by Franck, Oratorio de Noël by Saint-Saëns, Vespers by Rachmaninov, Requiem by Kreek and Misa Criolla by Ramírez. In 2017 one could hear and see him in the opera Acis and Galatea by Händel, a production of BarokOpera Amsterdam. In 2015 he sang the role of Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. Besides this he sang as a soloist contemporary music during the Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Utrecht (2013, 2014) and the Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn (2014). In song recitals he worked with the pianists Han-Louis Meijer, Rixt van der Kooij and Rik Kuppen and performed mainly the German romantic repertoire, including Dichterliebe and Liederkreis Opus 39 by Schumann.
As a chorister he participated in several projects and he has sung three years in the Laurens Collegium Rotterdam and Rotterdam Symphony Chorus. With this he worked with orchestras like the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Residentie Orkest, Gelders Orkest and Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw, and with conductors like Riccardo Chailly, Reinbert de Leeuw, Nathalie Stutzmann, Jan Willem de Vriend, Cristian Măcelaru, Antonella Manacorda, Jac van Steen, Pablo Heras-Casado, Jonathan Darlington, Marcus Creed, Wiecher Mandemaker, Daniël Salbert, Caroline Westgeest, Manoj Kamps and Klaas-Jan de Groot. Among the repertoire he has sung are cantatas, motets and Matthäus-Passion by J.S. Bach, Händel’s Israel in Egypt, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Beethoven’s Fidelio, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Schönberg’s Gurrelieder, Fauré’s Requiem, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Martin’s Messe pour double chœur a cappella, Britten’s War Requiem, Vivier’s Journal and Henze’s Elogium Musicum.
Since 2018 he is only available as a soloist and he focuses on the oratorio, opera and song repertoire for lyric tenor.
Besides his musical education Maarten holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Cultural Studies from the Radboud University of Nijmegen.
